In Specific Circumstances

Prayer while Visiting the Most Blessed Sacrament

My Lord Jesus Christ, for the love which You bear to men, You remain night and day in this Sacrament full of compassion and of love, awaiting, calling, and welcoming all who come to visit You. I believe that You are present in the Sacrament of the Altar: I adore You from the abyss of my nothingness, and I thank You for all the graces which You have bestowed upon me and in particular for having given me Yourself in this Sacrament, for having given me your holy Mother Mary for my advocate, and for having called me to visit You in this chapel. I now salute

Your most loving Heart: and this for three ends:

1. In thanksgiving for this great gift;

2. To make amends to You for all the outrages which You receive in this Sacrament from all Your enemies;

3. I intend by this visit to adore You in all the places on earth in which You are the least revered and the most abandoned.

My Jesus, I love You with all my heart. I grieve for having so many times offended Your infinite goodness. I promise with Your grace never more to offend You in the future. Now, miserable and unworthy though I be, I consecrate myself to You without reserve;

I give You my entire will, my affections, my desires, and all that I possess. From now on dispose of me and of all that I have as You please. All that I ask of You and desire is Your holy love, final perseverance, and the perfect accomplishment of Your will. I recommend to You the souls in purgatory; but especially those who had the greatest devotion to the most Blessed Sacrament and to the Blessed Virgin Mary. I also recommend to You all poor sinners. My dear Saviour, I unite all my affections with the affections of Your most loving Heart; and I offer them, thus united, to Your eternal Father, and beseech Him in Your name to vouchsafe, for Your love, to accept them. Amen

Prayer for Courage

Lord, give me courage in my everyday life. Courage to speak your truth and to defend the faith. Courage to follow your commandments and to live your beatitudes. Courage to live a moral life, even if it means losing friends. Courage to pray. Courage to love others, especially the poor. Courage to visit the sick and the lonely. Lord, may I not fall back in fear, but may I do your will, strengthened by your love.

O Eternal Father, You created me in your image and likeness and you long to hold me always in your loving embrace. Your love has sustained me in my trials and struggles. Each day, I will live as a beloved child of God, confident in your divine mercy. I will place in you all my trust and hope, for you lift my gaze from shame, fear, and the pain of division to your unparalleled love for me on the cross. By the power of Christ's great wounds, heal the wounds left in my life by the tragedy of my parents' separation or divorce, or family brokenness. Help me love, despite the pain. Help me forgive, no matter how deep the hurt. Help me have peace and virtue when old and new wounds arise. Remain with me, Holy Spirit, so that I may be a wellspring of healing for others. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Prayer for Help Against Spiritual Enemies

Glorious Saint Michael, Prince of the heavenly hosts, who stands always ready to give assistance to the people of God; who fought with the dragon, the old serpent, and cast him out of heaven, and now valiantly defends the Church of God that the gates of hell may never prevail against her, I earnestly entreat you to assist me also, in the painful and dangerous conflict which I sustain against the same formidable foe.

Be with me, O mighty Prince! that I may courageously fight and vanquish that proud spirit, whom you, by the Divine Power, gloriously overthrew, and whom our powerful King, Jesus Christ, has, in our nature, completely overcome; so having triumphed over the enemy of my salvation, I may with you and the holy angels, praise the clemency of God who, having refused mercy to the rebellious angels after their fall, has granted repentance and forgiveness to fallen man. Amen.

Prayer for Compassion against Harshness

Lord, preserve my gentle spirit, especially in the midst of chaos. The world pushes, and I want to push back. Help me to be more like you: forgiving and loving, yet strong. Teach me kindness and gentleness in all I do and say. Give me the strength to handle the ways of this world with love. Lord, I trust in your ways. Come Holy Spirit, fill me with compassion for others. Ignite in me the fire of God’s love. Help me to reach out to those who will cross my path today. I want to participate in your compassion.  I want to reach out with your heart, with your power of mercy and love. I want to do more. Come, Holy Spirit, fill my heart, so that it may overflow with compassion for all I meet today. Amen

Prayer to Know God's Will

May it please the supreme and divine Goodness to give us all abundant grace ever to know his most holy will and perfectly to fulfill it

Prayer before Sleep

Jesus Christ my God, I adore you and thank you for all the graces you have given me this day. I offer you my sleep and all the moments of this night, and I ask you to keep me from sin. I put myself within your sacred side and under the mantle of our Lady. Let your holy angels stand about me and keep me in peace. And let your blessing be upon me. Amen.

Prayer before Study

For Individual

Ineffable Creator, Who, from the treasures of your wisdom, has established three hierarchies of angels, has arrayed them in marvelous order above the fiery heavens, and has marshaled the regions of the universe with such artful skill,  You are proclaimed the true font of light and wisdom, and the primal origin raised high beyond all things.  Pour forth a ray of your brightness into the darkened places of my mind; disperse from my soul the twofold darkness into which I was born: sin and ignorance.

You make eloquent the tongues of little children. Refine my speech and pour forth upon my lips the goodness of your blessing. Grant to me keenness of mind, capacity to remember, skill in learning, subtlety to interpret, and eloquence in speech.

May You guide the beginning of my work, direct its progress, and bring it to completion. You who are true God and true Man, Who live and reign, world without end.

End of the Semester (used by several Private Universities)

God of Wisdom, I thank you for the knowledge gained and the learning experiences of the semester. I come to you this day and ask you to illuminate my mind and heart. Let your Spirit be with me as I prepare for exams, guiding my studies, and giving me insight so that I can perform to the best of my ability. Please grant me the strength to handle the pressure during these final days of the semester, and the ability to keep an appropriate perspective through it all.

Help me to keep in mind what is truly important, even as I focus my time and energy on these tests in the immediate future. Finally, may I sense your peace in knowing that I applied myself to the challenges of this day.

Prayer for Healing

Short - Luke 5:12-13

Lord, look upon me with eyes of mercy, may your healing hand rest upon me, may your lifegiving powers flow into every cell of my body and into the depths of my soul, cleansing, purifying, restoring me to wholeness and strength for service in your Kingdom. Amen.

“Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean.” Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said, “I do will it. Be made clean.” And the leprosy left him immediately.

Lord Jesus, you came to heal our wounded and troubled hearts. I beg you to heal the torments that cause anxiety in my heart. I beg you, in a particular way, to heal all which are the cause of sin. I beg you to come into my life and heal me of the psychological harms that struck me in my early years or adulthood and from the injuries that they caused throughout my life.

Lord Jesus, you know my burdens. I lay them all on your Good Shepherd’s heart. I beseech you - by the merits of the great, open wound in your heart - to heal the small wounds that are in mine. Heal the pain of my memories, so that nothing that has happened to me will cause me to remain in pain and anguish, filled with anxiety.

Heal, O Lord, all those wounds that have been the cause of the evil that is rooted in my life. I want to forgive all those who have offended me. Look to those inner sores that make me unable to forgive. You who came to forgive the afflicted of heart, please, heal my own heart. Heal, my Lord Jesus, those intimate wounds that cause me physical illness. I offer you my heart, accept it, Lord, purify it and give me the sentiments of your Divine Heart. Help me to be meek and humble.

Heal me, O Lord, from the pain caused by the death of my loved ones, which is oppressing me. Grant me to regain peace and joy in the knowledge that you are the Resurrection and the Life. Make me an authentic witness to your resurrection, your victory over sin and death, your living presence among us.

Amen.

Prayer for Growth

With each new day that dawns I am growing up, O Lord. It’s not too soon to start thinking of what I want to be. It’s very hard, I think, to make the right decision but I pray that You will help and guide me. Show me what to do. Let me share, someday, my talents where they’re needed. And when You show me, give me courage to be generous enough to do what You want. Amen.

Prayer in Illness

Lord, I am questioning where you are in all of this. Give me faith. Give me strength. If it is your will, take this burden from me, for I am weak and tired, and I need to feel your healing touch. If I must endure this pain, help me to accept each day with grace and dignity.

Help me to feel your presence. Help my unbelief.

Prayer for the Sick

Watch, O Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or weep tonight, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend your sick ones, O Lord Christ. Rest your weary ones. Bless your dying ones. Soothe your suffering ones. Pity your afflicted ones. Shield your joyous ones. And for all your love's sake. Amen.

Prayer for the Dying

Most Merciful Jesus, lover of souls, I pray You, by the agony of Your most Sacred Heart, and by the sorrows of Your Immaculate Mother, to wash in Your Most Precious Blood, the sinners of the world who are now in their agony, and who will die today. Heart of Jesus, once in agony, have mercy on the dying. Amen.

Prayer for Leaders

Dear Lord, we pray that you will create among us Catholic leaders;

individuals made in your image

who will apply your teachings in their lives

and positively impact our families, our workplaces,

our communities, and our Church.

Help us to inspire those with whom we come in contact

to share their God-given talents, to do your will

and to find a place in your kingdom

where their deepest joys and the world’s deepest hungers

meet and cry for their special qualities and abilities.

Make us leaders, Lord,

leaders with strength and courage to follow you.

Leaders who make your love visible to the world

in all of our words and actions. Amen.

Prayer to St. Anthony

Saint Anthony, perfect imitator of Jesus, who received from God the special power of restoring lost things, grant that I may find (mention your petition) which has been lost. At least restore to me peace and tranquility of mind, the loss of which has afflicted me even more than my material loss.

To this favor I ask another of you: that I may always remain in possession of the true good that is God. Let me rather lose all things than lose God, my supreme good. Let me never suffer the loss of my greatest treasure, eternal life with God. Amen.

Prayer for Poor Souls

O gentle Heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory, have mercy on them. Be not severe in Your judgments, but let some drops of Your precious blood fall upon the devouring flames. And, Merciful Savior, send Your angels to conduct them to a place of refreshment, light, and peace.

Prayer in Times of Suffering

Behold me, my beloved Jesus, weighed down under the burden of my trials and sufferings, I cast myself at Your feet, that You may renew my strength and my courage, while I rest here in Your Presence. Permit me to lay down my cross my cross in Your Sacred Heart, for only Your infinite goodness can sustain me; only Your infinite love can help me bear my cross; only Your powerful hand can lighten its weight. O Divine King, Jesus, whose heart is so compassionate to the afflicted, I wish to live in You; suffer and die in You. During my life, be to me my model and my support; At the hour of my death, be me hope and refuge. Amen.

St. Ignatius Prayer Against Depression

O Christ Jesus When all is darkness and we feel our weakness and helplessness, give us the sense of Your Presence, Your Love and Your Strength. Help us to have perfect trust in Your protecting love and strengthening power, so that nothing may frighten or worry us, for, living close to You, we shall see Your Hand, Your Purpose, and Your Will through all things.

Prayer for Light

O Holy Spirit of God, take me as thy disciple. Guide me, illuminate me, Sanctify me, and unite me to Yourself. Bind my hands that they may do no evil. Cover my Eyes that they may see it no more. Sanctify my heart, that evil may not dwell with in me.

Be thou my God, be thou my guide where ever you lead me, I will go. What so ever you forbid, I will renounce. and what so ever you command me, in thy strength I will do. Lead me to the fullness of your truth. Amen.

Prayer for Times of Temptation

Let me not deceive myself. I know what I am considering is wrong. Let me not be swept away by its immediate attraction.

God the Father, watch over me.

Christ our Lord, strengthen me.

Holy Spirit, live in me.

Saint Joseph, protect me.

Blessed Mother, comfort and pray for me.

Patrons of mine, pray for me.

Acknowledgment of Sins and Prayer for Pardon

O Lord, the hour of your favor draws near,

the day of your mercy and our salvation.

We acknowledge our sins

and our offenses are always before us.

Blot out all our wrongdoings

and give us a new and steadfast spirit.

Restore us to your friendship

and number us among the living

who share the joy of Christ your Son. Amen.

-Another Prayer-

May the almighty and merciful Lord

grant us joy with peace,

amendment of life,

room for true repentance,

the grace and consolation of the Holy Spirit

and perseverance in good works.

Amen.

Prayer for the Gift of Tears

Almighty and most gentle God,

when your people thirsted

you drew living water for them out of a rock.

Draw tears of compunction from our stony hearts,

give us grace to lament our sins

make us worthy us to receive your merciful forgiveness.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayers for Vocations

O Holy Spirit, Spirit of wisdom and divine love, impart Your knowledge, understanding, and counsel to youth that they may know the vocation wherein they can best serve God. Give them courage and strength to follow God's holy will. Guide their uncertain steps, strengthen their resolutions, shield their chastity, fashion their minds, conquer their hearts, and lead them to the vineyards where they will labor in God's holy service. Amen.

Or

Lord, I know you love me and have great plans for me. But sometimes I am overwhelmed by the thought of my future. Show me how to walk forward one day at a time. May I take heart while I search openly for what it is you want me to do with my life. Inspire in me wisdom and understanding to see your vision for my life and respond with openness to whatever you call me to be. Show me your way Lord. Amen.

Or

Gracious God, You are the gentle presence, the peaceful light, that fills our whole world. We believe that you care for all your creatures with wisdom and love. Take care of us, your Church, this day. Give to us all grace and courage to live out our baptism as faithful disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. Give us good pastors who will call us to love and forgiveness and lead us in worship. in the community of the Spirit. Bring forth from among us other ministers whose many-splendored gifts will strengthen our community. Raise up people in religious life who by their unusual witness to the Gospel will call us to the love of God and neighbor. You have enfolded the smallness of our humanity in your divinity. Fill us all with your Holy Spirit. Amen.

Or

Gracious and loving God, you have blessed us with the privilege of becoming Parents. We ask that you provide us with all that we need in accepting this awesome responsibility. We pray that we will be open to your spirit who is our source of strength as we witness to our children your love for each of them and your desire for them to be happy and to live a full life.

We ask your help so we may guide and encourage our children to believe that they each have a special calling and to use their gifts and talents for others. We pray, Heavenly Father, that our children will discover and respond enthusiastically to your desire for them

whether it be to the vocation of single, married, ordained or consecrated life. We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus through the grace of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Pope Benedict XVI's Prayer for Vocations

O Father, raise up among Christians abundant and holy vocations to the priesthood, who keep the faith alive and guard the blessed memory of your Son Jesus through the preaching of his word and the administration of the Sacraments, with which you continually renew your faithful. Grant us holy ministers of your altar, who are careful and fervent guardians of the Eucharist, the sacrament of the supreme gift of Christ for the redemption of the world. Call ministers of your mercy, who, through the sacrament of Reconciliation, spread the joy of your forgiveness. Grant, O Father, that the Church may welcome with joy the numerous inspirations of the Spirit of your Son and, docile to His teachings, may she care for vocations to the ministerial priesthood and to the consecrated life. Sustain the Bishops, priests and deacons, consecrated men and women, and all the baptized in Christ, so that they may faithfully fulfill their mission at the service of the Gospel. This we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Mary, Queen of Apostles, pray for us.

Prayer before a Crucifix

Look down upon me, good and gentle Jesus while before Your face I humbly kneel and, with burning soul, pray and beseech You to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope, and charity; true contrition for my sins, and a firm purpose of amendment.

While I contemplate, with great love and tender pity, your five most precious wounds, pondering over them within me and calling to mind the words which David, your prophet, said to You, my Jesus: "They have pierced My hands and My feet, they have numbered all My bones."

Prayer for Our Times

In a selfish world that seeks to destroy You O Lord, and in a world mounted with false gods and pyramids of pleasure, we seek You O Lord, with a loving and sincere heart.

In a listless world that has lost its divine beat and pulsates erratically with hate, envy and jealousy, greed and every type of crime, we listen for the comforting words You uttered to a little girl when You took her by the hand and said, “Telitha Koum” – Little girl, rise.

In a faithless world we strive to touch the hem of Your garment and our reach is not long enough, it seems. Our courage is hardly reflective of Your undying loyalty and love for us.

In a blind world we search the walls and wells of time, for at least some small penetrating light to restore our faith in You O Lord, and to leave all things directed to Almighty God. In a musty and ill-smelling world sunken very low in the foul odors of our sexually obsessed society, we look to You, O Lord, for relief from the swamp of filth and corruption, to make our senses wholly responsive to the Divine Banquet and the Last Supper in reparation for our sins and the sins of others. The Last Supper became the beginning of our frequent covenant with You, O Lord, in the incensation of the oblation by the angels themselves and in the Divine-Human harmony. In a deaf, indifferent and unconcerned world, O Lord, grant us the hearing of the Holy Word and never close the Holy Words to us. We hope to share in Your life, in Your peace, in Your justice that we remain always in perfect accord with You.

May the deep springs of grace issue forth the gifts and the fruits of the Holy Spirit so that we too may be filled with Divine Love and with Divine Compassion. We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, who dwells in eternity with the Father and The Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever, Amen

Act of Faith

O my God, I firmly believe that you are one God in three divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe that your divine Son became man and died for our sins and that he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches because you have revealed them who are eternal truth and wisdom, who can neither deceive nor be deceived. In this faith I intend to live and die. Amen.

Act of Hope

O Lord God, I hope by your grace for the pardon of all my sins and after life here to gain eternal happiness because you have promised it who are infinitely powerful, faithful, kind, and merciful.  In this hope I intend to live and die. Amen.

Act of Love

O Lord God, I love you above all things and I love my neighbor for your sake because you are the highest, infinite and perfect good, worthy of all my love. In this love I intend to live and die. Amen.

Prayers during Lent

ST. AMBROSE OF MILAN

O Lord, who hast mercy upon all,

take away from me my sins,

and mercifully kindle in me

the fire of thy Holy Spirit.

Take away from me the heart of stone,

and give me a heart of flesh,

a heart to love and adore you,

a heart to delight in you,

to follow and enjoy you,

for sake of Jesus my Lord. Amen

ST. AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO

O Lord,

the house of my soul is narrow;

enlarge it that you may enter in.

It is ruinous, O repair it!

It displeases your sight.

I confess it, I know.

But who shall cleanse it,

to whom shall I cry but to you?

Cleanse me from my secret faults, O Lord,

and spare your servant from strange sins.

ST. EPHRAIM THE SYRIAN

O Lord and Master of my life,

give me not the spirit of laziness,

despair, lust of power, and idle talk.

But give rather the spirit of sobriety,

humility, patience and love to your servant.

Yea, O Lord and King,

grant me to see my own transgressions

and not to judge my brother,

for you are blessed unto ages of ages. Amen

ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM

O my all-merciful God and Lord,

Jesus Christ, full of pity:

Through your great love you descended from your throne

and became incarnate in order to save the human race.

O Savior, I beseech you to save me by your grace!

If you save anyone because of their works,

that would not be grace but only reward of duty,

but you are compassionate and full of mercy!

You said, O my Christ,

"Whoever believes in me shall live and never die."

If then, faith in you saves the lost, then save me,

O my God and Creator, for I believe.

Let faith and not my unworthy works be counted to me, O my God,

for you will find no works which could account me righteous.

O Lord, from now on let me love you as intensely as I have loved sin,

and work for you as hard as I once worked for the evil one.

I promise that I will work to do your will,

my Lord and God, Jesus Christ,

all the days of my life and forever more.

BLADWIN OF CANTERBURY

Lord, take away my heart of stone,

a heart so bitter and uncircumcised,

and give me a new heart,

a heart of flesh, a pure heart.

You cleanse the heart and love the clean heart.

Take possession of my heart and dwell in it,

contain it and fill it,

you who are higher than the heights of my spirit

and closer to me than my innermost self!

You are the pattern of all beauty and the seal of all holiness.

Set the seal of your likeness upon my heart!

In your mercy set your seal upon my heart,

God of my heart and my portion for ever. Amen.

MELANIA THE YOUNGER

I have consecrated my entire self to you,

and taking me by your right hand

you have led me with your counsel.

But in my human frailty

I have sinned both in word and deed

many times against you,

who are pure and without sin.

Therefore, accept my prayer

together with the tears I offer you

through your holy ones, the victors in the arena,

Purify me, your weak servant,

so that on departing toward you

my passage may be hastened
